Abstract
In this short essay, I intend to assess what the police institution in the United States has become and where it might be going. I will do so by answering three questions: 1) What is distinctive about American policing? 2) What are the major changes that have occurred in American policing over the last 30 years? 3) What are the factors currently shaping American policing?
